My Personal Reason for Getting a Tattoo

Everyone has their own reasons for wanting a tattoo; after all we're all unique. Some of us are inspired by others, some like the idea of enhancing their body, while others simply wanted to have a visual representation of something that is important to them.

For me, I fall into the third category. I have three tattoos; each representing the most important thing in my life, my wife and my two children. I've met many people with tattoos; it's surprising how many people have tattoos done for this reason. It's obviously difficult to speak for everyone, however for me there is no more public or permanent way to show my love.

It's actually quite funny, when ever anyone sees my tattoos for the first time; you can almost guarantee that they will ask what they mean and why I got them. When I explain, the typical answer is something like "oh, cool". Every now and again, some naysayer will ask whether I ever regretted being tattooed, my strong (and courteous) response is always a resounding no. As someone that travels a lot and is often away from home, all I have to do it look at my tattoos to feel closer to my family, how perfect is that.

I recently met a good friend for a beer and we were speaking about tattoos in general, my friend does not like the idea of tattoos, so we were having a friendly debate about the pros and cons. I was stopped in my tracks when he asked me whether I would approve of my daughter getting a tattoo; you see my friend is also a very good debater. Without hesitation, I answered that I would be delighted for my daughter to have her own tattoo, so long as she was old enough and was responsible enough to understand the ramifications herself. Knowing that he was not going to win this argument, my friend quickly changed the topic of conversation.
